Not tomorrow.
Not when the subject briefly returns to public attention again.
Not when someone remembers, for a moment, the animals living under the pyramids.
Help is needed here and now.
We have a place where we can act. We have people on the ground. We have a real possibility to treat, respond and change what for years has been accepted there as normal.
And that is exactly why we are returning to Egypt.
Because there are horses still working, even though their bodies should have been allowed to rest long ago. Because there are donkeys collapsing in the streets and no one even stops. Because there are dogs who learn every day that a human being means danger. Because there are places where one decision and the right tools can save a life.
We are not starting from zero.
We are not building everything from the beginning.
We are not checking whether “this is even possible”.
We are already there.
We have been there for years.
And today we are taking the next step.
Because in Egypt, change does not happen through words. It happens only when someone is truly present on the ground.
Treating. Responding. Taking responsibility.
That is why we are returning with a very concrete goal.
It has to be said clearly: Egypt is one of the most difficult places for animal welfare work that we know.
Horses function there almost like part of the infrastructure. They are expected to work. To pull. To carry. To earn money. Day after day, in the same rhythm, regardless of their health. When pain, lameness or visible weakness appear, the question is not “what should we do?”, but “how much longer can he still be used?”.
We did not see care there.
We saw habit.
A habit of wounds on legs.
A habit of abrasions from harnesses.
A habit of horses barely standing, yet still being pushed to work.
The way horses are shod very often deepens the problem instead of solving it. Hooves are burdened with improvised solutions. Materials are chosen not to protect, but simply to “make it work somehow”. The result is animals moving in constant pain, with damaged joints and irreversible changes.
Donkeys are treated even worse.
Not as living beings, but as disposable tools.
When one can no longer cope, it simply disappears.
Another takes its place.
Without reflection.
Without responsibility.
Without consequences.
Dogs in Egypt are not a neutral part of the space.
They are unwanted.
There is no indifference there.
There is hostility.
We saw dogs chased away from shops and homes with stones. Not because they were aggressive, but because they existed. We saw dogs who had learned to run at the sound of footsteps. Dogs who do not approach food because experience has taught them that the human hand often brings pain.
There were also situations that are difficult to call anything other than violence for entertainment. Dogs beaten, kicked, dragged across the ground. Not to “solve a problem”, but to show dominance over the weaker.
After dark, many of these animals simply disappear.
In the morning, they do not come back.
And no one asks questions.
Because in this system, questions are not needed.
Under the pyramids and far beyond them, the same rule applies.
An animal has a function.
When it no longer fulfils that function, it stops mattering.
We have been in many places where no one wanted cameras or people from the outside. We saw reluctance, tension, sometimes open hostility. Because looking means responsibility. And responsibility means change.
And still, we were there.
And we are returning.
Because we know that without constant presence, nothing changes.
Because we do not come for images.
We come for real action.
In Egypt, treating animals is not obvious.
It is an exception.
That is why one of the most important reasons for our return is treatment based on knowledge, not guesswork. Treatment that does not rely on assumptions, but on diagnosis. On tests. On responsible decisions.
During our work under the pyramids, we met people who, despite the conditions and pressure, are trying to act differently. People who take in horses in a state of extreme exhaustion. People who see the consequences of years of neglect and poor decisions. People who want to treat animals, but often do not have the tools to do it.
In Egypt, treatment is very often done “by feel”.
Without tests.
Without blood analysis.
Without knowledge of the condition of internal organs.
This leads to mistakes.
Wrong doses.
Wrongly chosen medicines.
Antibiotics given blindly.
Blood parasites destroying the body for months.
That is why a biochemical blood analyzer is so important.
This device allows veterinarians to assess the function of the liver, kidneys and other organs. It makes it possible to choose safe treatment, monitor progress and react immediately before it is too late.
With it, around 35 blood tests can be performed every day. Not only for horses that have already collapsed, but also for those who are still standing, still working and still have a chance to receive real help.
It is the difference between treatment and guessing.
Between a chance and a risk.
The cost of such an analyzer is around 12,000 euros. In local realities, this is an enormous expense, which is why one of our goals is also to support the purchase of this equipment, which can truly change the standard of care for horses under the pyramids.
